What is Underearners Anonymous (UA), and what helps between meetings?
Underearners Anonymous (UA) is a 12-step fellowship for people who want to recover from underearning. UA says underearning is not only about money. It is also about not acknowledging and using your own capabilities. UA works through meetings, sponsorship, the Twelve Steps and twelve tools. The only requirement is a desire to stop underearning.
UA at a glance
- What it is: a Twelve Step fellowship for recovery from underearning
- Who can join: the only requirement for membership is a desire to stop underearning (UA's Third Tradition)
- Meetings: by phone, by video and face to face. UA's online meeting list shows times in Eastern Time
- Method: the Twelve Steps adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous, plus twelve UA tools
- Affiliation: UA groups are self-supporting and do not endorse outside enterprises (Traditions Six and Seven)
What is underearning?
UA describes it this way: the most visible effect is not being able to provide for your needs, including future needs. But it is also about not being able to fully acknowledge and express your capabilities. UA calls it underachieving, or "under-being", no matter how much money you make.
So you do not have to be broke to belong. Someone can earn a decent income and still recognise the pattern.
How does UA work?
UA follows the Twelve Steps, with Step One reading "we admitted we were powerless over underearning." Alongside them it uses twelve tools, including time recording, meetings, sponsorship, goals pages, action meetings, action partners, solvency, communication and savings.
Two of these are specific to UA. An action partner is someone you check in with regularly about your earning concerns, so you each have accountability. Time recording means keeping a written record of how you spend your time, to build awareness of it.
What is a UA meeting like?
UA suggests newcomers attend at least six meetings, by phone or face to face, as close together as possible before deciding whether UA is for you. Members share their experience and listen. You can find phone and video meetings on UA's meetings page.
Who is UA for?
UA publishes its own list of twelve symptoms of underearning. Some of them:
- undervaluing and under-pricing your work, and fearing to ask for what the market will bear
- giving away your time or services for free when there is no clear benefit
- rejecting ideas that could expand your life or career
- not following up on leads, jobs or opportunities that could pay
If several of these sound familiar, UA's own site has the full list.
What helps between UA meetings?
The pattern does not wait for a meeting. It shows up on a Sunday night, when you are about to quote far too low, say yes to free work, or talk yourself out of an idea. UA members use the communication tool for this: calling or texting another member or an action partner.
When nobody is awake, an AI companion can fill the gap. You can text it at any hour, say out loud what you are about to do, and talk through one small next step before your next meeting or action-partner call.
What an AI sponsor is not
- Not a financial adviser. It does not give investment, tax or debt advice, or tell you what to charge.
- Not a sponsor or a meeting. It is a bridge to them, not a replacement.
- Not affiliated with UA. UA's Sixth Tradition says a UA group should never endorse or lend the UA name to an outside enterprise.
